Jonquil Williamson | Studio 144

Surrey based artist Jonquil is known for her vibrant still life or rich tonal landscapes. Although her work is mostly representational, she allows the mark-making and textures created as she layers the paint, to project the essence of the object or place. Her artistic process is akin to unravelling a visual puzzle that needs to be assembled and solved first, then released with the introduction of colours and compositions as the images starts to take shape.

Jonquil’s work has been exhibited in galleries across the UK and has been shortlisted for the Visual Art Open in 2017 and 2018. In 2016 she also exhibited with selected shortlisted works in the National Open Art Prize. She exhibits regularly through galleries at The Affordable Art Fair in London and across Europe.

Of her work she shares, “like many still life painters, I find inspiration from taking everyday things and elevating to something beautiful and positive. I strive to create an atmosphere with my works; from the calmness and serenity of Morandi inspired clusters of pots and vessels, to the uplifting and cheerful vibrancy of fruits and foliage. Colour is the dominant driver in all my works, in fact all my paintings are inspired initially by colours I observe in the landscape and things around me.

Originally an accountant, Jonquil always sought an outlet for her creativity. In her late 30s she began taking life drawing and then watercolour classes. Once she found oil painting, she began to develop her art practice more seriously and after her 2013 diploma in Art and Design, joined the vibrant arts community that is Wimbledon Art Studios.
