I was not always a painter, but I have always been an artist.
Since childhood the only way I’ve known how to process the world has been through creative acts. At first to write stories, then later in life learning to draw and now as a painter further exploring and translating my experience through abstract art.
Inspiration stems from walks where I record in my sketchbook and on my camera the markings on stones, walls, and trees.
As I study them I reflect on the stories written by time and the elements.
At present I find myself exploring the fusion of gestural marks and textured surfaces.
This juncture signifies a pivotal moment in my artistic growth.
Guided by experimentation with reductive techniques on painted surfaces, I’m striving to capture the spontaneous, primal energy of creation.
Contemplating my early days of learning to write, I’ve recognised a kinship between the organic beauty of gestural marks and a raw, spontaneous energy I want with my artistic expression.
My mark making draws from the echoes of cave drawings, the freedom and energy of childhood scribbles and the imprints of the natural world.
Using the textured surfaces that I create with cold wax and oil medium, I aim to portray the narratives of the earth plus timeless acts of mark making in a way that invites contemplation and dialogue.
