Stephen studied fine art at Leicester Polytechnic and the Slade School of Fine Art, University of London, where he joined the Experimental Department under the direction of Malcom Hughes, a founding member of the Systems Art group. While at the Slade he began producing computer images and subsequently undertook a PhD and taught computer science, whilst researching the development of computer system designed to support artists and designers before returning to Art and Design in 1992.
Throughout his career he maintained an art practice and his work is held in the British Computer Art Society and V&A collections.
He works between the figurative and the abstract in a range media, with an interest in the re-reading of photographic images, repetition and transformation, process, chance and order, and interaction.
